Tips for Selling a High Mileage Car in the UAE

You can still get a fair price when selling a high mileage car in the UAE. Mileage lowers a car's value, but it is not the only thing buyers look at. Service records, the car's condition and honest pricing decide how much the extra kilometres really cost you.

Below are practical tips for UAE sellers: what counts as high mileage, how it affects your price, what to do before you sell, and what to avoid.

What counts as high mileage in the UAE?

There is no official number. Many buyers and insurers start to treat a car as higher mileage at around 130,000 to 150,000 km. But the number on the odometer only means something when you compare it with the car's age. A three-year-old car with 120,000 km is high mileage for its age. A ten-year-old car with the same reading is low.

Long distances are normal in the UAE. A daily commute between Dubai and Abu Dhabi can add more than 50,000 km a year, so many cars here reach high readings quickly. Buyers know this, and most of those kilometres are highway driving, which is easier on the engine and gearbox than stop-and-go city traffic.

This is roughly how buyers in the UAE see different mileage ranges:

MileageHow buyers usually see it
Under 60,000 kmLow. Worth extra if the car is also fairly new and has full service records
60,000 to 120,000 kmThe most common range in the used car market. Normal wear expected
120,000 to 180,000 kmHigher mileage. Buyers check service history and upcoming maintenance closely
Over 180,000 kmVery high. Condition and records matter more than the badge or the year

How does high mileage affect your car's value?

High mileage lowers value because buyers expect more wear and more maintenance costs soon. Parts like suspension bushes, brakes, shock absorbers and the timing belt wear with distance, so a buyer will think about what they may need to replace in the next year and lower their offer to match.

How much it affects your price depends on a few things:

  • Age. In the UAE, age often lowers value more than mileage. A newer car with high mileage can sell for more than an older car with low mileage.
  • Service history. A 150,000 km car serviced on schedule is often in better condition than a 60,000 km car that missed services.
  • The model. Cars known for durability, such as the Toyota Land Cruiser or Nissan Patrol, keep buyer interest at higher readings. Some luxury and performance models lose value faster as kilometres go up because repairs cost more.
  • Condition. A clean interior, a strong AC and no warning lights tell buyers the car was looked after, whatever the odometer says.

Online listings show asking prices, not selling prices. To know what your car is actually worth, get your car valued by a buyer who inspects it in person.

Tips for selling a high mileage car

1. Collect your full service history

This is the most useful thing you can do. Service records prove the mileage is real and show the car was maintained. Gather your service book, dealer printouts and garage invoices, and sort them by date. If records are missing, ask the dealer to print your history using your VIN or plate number, and check your email for old invoices.

2. Do the service that is due

If a major service is due soon, buyers will deduct its cost from their offer. On many cars the timing belt is due somewhere between 80,000 and 120,000 km, so check your owner's manual. If the work is due, doing it and keeping the invoice usually pays back. If it was done recently, show the receipt.

3. Fix small problems that buyers notice

A dashboard warning light, weak AC or a worn tyre makes buyers worry about bigger hidden problems. These are usually cheap to fix compared with how much they lower an offer. In the UAE, test the AC before any viewing, especially in summer.

4. Get a pre-sale inspection

An inspection report from a garage or testing centre shows the buyer the car's current condition. It answers the question every buyer of a high km car has: what is wrong with it? If the report finds a problem, you can fix it or price it in before you list the car.

5. Clean the car properly

Wear and tear shows most on the inside: seats, steering wheel, floor mats and the driver's door. A proper interior and exterior clean costs little and makes the car look looked after. Remove personal items and stickers before photos and viewings.

6. Price it against cars with similar mileage

Compare your car with listings of the same model, year and a similar reading, not with low mileage examples. If you price a 180,000 km car like a 90,000 km car, you will get calls but no serious offers, and the car will sit unsold while it keeps losing value.

7. Be clear about the mileage and explain it

State the exact mileage in your listing and explain it if you can: "mostly highway, daily Dubai to Abu Dhabi commute" tells buyers the kilometres were easy ones. Being upfront builds trust. Never adjust the odometer. It is illegal, and buyers can check the reading against service and inspection records.

8. Have your documents ready

Prepare everything before you meet a buyer so the sale doesn't stall:

  • Mulkiya (vehicle registration card) and original Emirates ID
  • Traffic fines checked and cleared, because the transfer can't go through with fines on the car
  • Bank clearance letter if the car is under finance
  • Technical inspection if the car is older than 3 years, as required for ownership transfer
  • Service records and repair invoices in one folder

9. Sell sooner rather than later

A high mileage car keeps losing value with every year and every extra 10,000 km. If you have already decided to sell, waiting a few more months of daily commuting usually costs more than it saves.

What to avoid when selling a high mileage car

Expensive upgrades before selling. New rims, tinting or body kits rarely add as much as they cost.

  • Hiding known problems. Buyers find them at inspection, and the offer usually drops further once trust is gone.
  • Overpricing. It wastes weeks and the car keeps adding kilometres.
  • Selling with unpaid fines or an active loan. The transfer can't be completed until these are sorted.

Private sale or car-buying service?

Both can work. The right choice depends on your car and how much time you have.

Private saleCar-buying service
PriceCan be higher if the car has full records and good conditionFair offer based on condition and the market
TimeListings, calls and viewings, which can take weeksBook a time, bring the car, get an offer the same day
High mileageMany private buyers filter out high km carsHigh mileage cars are bought regularly
TransferYou arrange the transfer with the buyerHelp with the ownership transfer

If your car has high mileage but full service history and a clean inspection, a private sale may be worth the time. If you want a quicker, certain sale, a car-buying service is usually the simpler option. You can also sell any car directly and skip the listing process.
