Sell a Car in Dubai

To sell car in Dubai, first clear any traffic fines and car loan, then prepare your Mulkiya and Emirates ID. Next, get your car inspected if needed, agree the price and payment with the buyer, and complete the ownership transfer through the RTA. After the sale, remove the car from your Salik account and contact your insurer.

Selling car in Dubai is simple when you know the steps and do them in the right order. Most problems happen because of an unpaid fine, a car loan that has not been released, or a missing document on the day of the transfer.

This guide explains every step of selling a car in Dubai. It covers the ways you can sell, the documents you need, how the RTA ownership transfer works, how to get paid safely, and what to do after the sale. It also explains what to do if your car is financed, has fines or is damaged.

Ways to sell a car in Dubai

There are four common ways to sell your car in Dubai:

  • Sell privately. You advertise the car online and deal with buyers yourself. You control the price, but it takes more time and effort.
  • Sell to a car-buying company. You bring your car to the buyer, they inspect it and make an offer. If you accept, you can usually finish the sale in one visit.
  • Trade in at a dealer. You give your old car to a dealer as part payment for another car.
  • Sell at an auction. Your car is offered to bidders, and the final price depends on the bids.

The steps below apply in most cases. If you sell to a car-buying company, the company will help with many of them for you.

Step 1: Check your car’s status

Before you talk to any buyer, make sure nothing will stop the transfer. You can check your car’s details on the RTA app or website, or on the Dubai Police app.

Check these three things:

  • Traffic fines. All fines must be paid before the transfer. This includes fines from other emirates, not only Dubai.
  • Car loan. If the car is financed, the bank has a mortgage on it. The bank must release the car before you can sell it.
  • Registration and insurance. Make sure your registration card (Mulkiya) and insurance are valid.

If you find any fines or a loan, deal with them early. This avoids delays when you have a buyer ready.

Step 2: Prepare your documents

For a normal sale by an individual in Dubai, keep these documents ready:

  • Mulkiya (car registration card)
  • Original Emirates ID
  • Valid car insurance
  • Technical inspection certificate, if your car needs one

Some cases need extra documents:

  • Financed car: a clearance or liability letter from your bank, and the mortgage release on the car.
  • Company-owned car: the trade licence, the authorised signatory’s documents and the company stamp.

If you sell to a car buying company, ask them what to bring. At Car Buying Zone (CBZ), you only need your Mulkiya and original Emirates ID.

Step 3: Find out what your car is worth

Knowing your car’s value helps you set a fair price and judge any offer you get. These are the main things that affect the value of a used car in Dubai:

  • Make, model and year. Popular models and newer cars usually hold their value better.
  • Mileage. Lower mileage usually means a higher value.
  • Specs. GCC-spec cars are often valued differently from imported cars.
  • Service history. A full service record, especially from the agency, adds confidence.
  • Condition. Paint, body, interior, tyres, engine and gearbox all matter.
  • Accident history. Past accidents and repairs affect the value.
  • Market demand. Prices change with the season and with what buyers want.

You can look at similar cars for sale online to get an idea of the market. You can also get an market competitive offer from our professional car evaluation. Remember that the final offer is always confirmed after a physical inspection.

Step 4: Prepare your car

You do not need to make big repairs before selling. But a clean, well-presented car makes a better first impression and can help with the inspection.

  • Clean the car inside and out.
  • Remove your personal items.
  • Find both keys, the service book and any receipts for recent work.
  • Fix small problems if they are cheap and easy, such as a warning light or a worn tyre.

Be honest about any known issues. Buyers will find them during the inspection anyway, and being open builds trust.

Step 5: Pass the technical inspection

In Dubai, a car usually needs to pass a technical inspection before its ownership can be transferred. You can book the test at an RTA-approved centre, such as Tasjeel.

Check the RTA app or website to see if your car needs a test. If the car fails, the centre will tell you what to fix before you test again.

If you sell to a car-buying company, ask them whether they handle this step for you.

Step 6: Agree the price and get paid safely

Once you and the buyer agree on a price, agree how and when you will be paid. Follow these simple rules to stay safe:

  • Get the full payment before you hand over the car, the keys and the documents.
  • Choose cash or a bank transfer you can see in your account.
  • Be careful with cheques, especially cheques with a future date.
  • Keep a written record of the agreed price and the payment.

If you sell privately, it is safer to complete the payment and the transfer on the same day.

Step 7: Complete the RTA ownership transfer

The ownership transfer moves the car from your name to the buyer’s name. In Dubai, this is done through the RTA.

You can complete the transfer in two ways:

  • Online: through the RTA website or app using UAE Pass, where both the seller and the buyer meet the online requirements.
  • In person: at an RTA Customer Happiness Centre or an approved vehicle testing and registration centre.

Before it approves the transfer, the RTA checks that there are no fines, that any bank mortgage has been released, that the car is insured and that the inspection has been passed.

The transfer fee is usually paid by the buyer. Check the current fees on the RTA website before the sale.

Step 8: What to do after the sale

When the transfer is complete, there are a few last things to do:

  • Salik. Remove the car from your Salik account, so the new owner’s toll trips are not charged to you.
  • Insurance. Contact your insurance company and ask about a refund for the unused part of your policy.
  • Number plate. Decide what to do with your plate. In Dubai, you can usually keep it for another car, or you can sell your number plate.
  • Check the RTA app. Make sure the car no longer appears under your name.

Selling a car in Dubai in special situations

Selling a financed car

You can sell a car that is still on a loan in Dubai. The bank must release the car before the transfer, so the loan needs to be settled first. After that, the bank gives you a clearance letter and releases the mortgage. Read our full guide on how to sell a financed car in Dubai.

Selling a car with traffic fines

The RTA will not transfer a car with unpaid fines. You can pay fines through the RTA app or the Dubai Police app. If you sell to Car Buying Zone, we may pay the fines on your behalf and deduct the amount from the agreed price.

Selling a car before leaving the UAE

If you are leaving the UAE, start the sale early. Clear your fines and any car loan, and make sure the car is fully transferred out of your name before you travel. Our page on selling your car before leaving the UAE explains how we can help you plan around your travel date.

Selling a damaged or high-mileage car

You can still sell a car with accident damage, mechanical problems or high mileage. The condition will affect the price, but it does not stop the sale. Car Buying Zone makes an offer on any car, in any condition.

Common mistakes when selling a car in Dubai

  • Waiting until the buyer is ready before checking for fines or a loan.
  • Handing over the car or the Mulkiya before getting paid.
  • Accepting a cheque with a future date from someone you do not know.
  • Forgetting to remove the car from your Salik account.
  • Not checking that the transfer is complete in the RTA app.
