how to sell your car in dubai

Here is how to sell your car in Dubai: clear your traffic fines, gather your Mulkiya and original Emirates ID, get a bank clearance letter if the car is financed, find out what your car is worth, choose a buyer, confirm the full payment, and then complete the ownership transfer through the RTA. After the sale, cancel your insurance and remove the car from your Salik account.

This guide shows how to sell your car in Dubai one step at a time, with the documents, typical fees and the special cases that catch sellers out: financed cars, company cars and selling before you leave the UAE.

Sell car in Dubai step by step: overview

  1. Check and clear traffic fines
  2. Gather your documents
  3. Find out what your car is worth
  4. Choose how to sell
  5. Pass the technical inspection, if needed
  6. Agree the price and get paid
  7. Complete the RTA ownership transfer
  8. Cancel insurance and Salik

Step 1: check and clear traffic fines

The ownership transfer can't go through while there are unpaid fines on the car. Check your fines on the RTA or Dubai Police app, or the Dubai Drive app, and pay them before you agree a sale. Remember that fines and Salik charges stay in your name until the transfer is complete.

Some car-buying companies can pay your fines for you and deduct the amount from the agreed price, which saves a step.

Step 2: documents to sell a car in Dubai

For a standard private car, these are the documents to sell a car in Dubai:

  • Mulkiya (vehicle registration card), valid and in your name
  • Original Emirates ID of the registered owner
  • Valid insurance on the car until the transfer

Extra documents for special cases:

SituationExtra documents
Car under financeBank clearance letter (also called a liability letter or release letter) after the loan is settled
Company-owned carTrade licence, NOC on company letterhead, company stamp, authorised signatory
Owner can't attendNotarised power of attorney
Car older than 3 yearsPassed technical inspection certificate
Car leaving the countryExport certificate instead of a normal transfer

Also collect your service history, both keys and the owner's manual. They are not legally required, but they help you get a better price.

Step 3: find out what your car is worth

Compare your car with similar cars on listing sites (same model, year, trim, spec and mileage), but remember that listings show asking prices, not final selling prices. An online valuation tool gives an indicative range. For a real number, get an in-person valuation where the car is inspected.

The main things that affect value are mileage, condition, accident history, service history, GCC or imported specs, and current demand for the model.

Step 4: choose how to sell

MethodGood forTrade-off
Private saleHighest possible price for a popular car in great conditionTime, viewings, test drives, payment risk
Dealer trade-inConvenience when buying a new carOften a lower value
Car-buying companyA fair offer and payment on one visitOffer is based on market and condition

If you sell to a private buyer, write a clear listing with good photos, the mileage, specs and service history. Go along on test drives and meet buyers in public places.

Step 5: technical inspection

In Dubai, cars older than 3 years generally need a passed technical inspection before the ownership transfer. You can take the test at RTA-approved centres such as Tasjeel and Shamil. The passing certificate is usually valid for 30 days, so book it close to your sale date.

Check tyres, lights, brakes, window tint and warning lights before the test. Most fails are caused by small items like a dead bulb or old tyres.

Step 6: agree the price and get paid

Agree the final price and payment method before you go to the transfer. The safest options are cash counted in person or a bank transfer that you can see as available balance in your own banking app.

Never complete the transfer or hand over the keys based on a transfer screenshot, a cheque that is "under collection", or a promise to pay later. These are the most common car sale scams in the UAE.

Step 7: RTA car ownership transfer

The RTA car ownership transfer moves the car into the buyer's name. Both seller and buyer usually need to be present at an RTA customer service centre or approved centre, and some steps can also be done through RTA's digital services.

  1. The buyer arranges insurance in their own name for the car.
  2. Both parties bring their documents (Mulkiya, Emirates IDs, inspection certificate if needed).
  3. The fees are paid and the transfer is processed.
  4. A new Mulkiya is issued in the buyer's name.

Car transfer fees in Dubai

Car transfer fees in Dubai are usually paid by the buyer, but you can agree otherwise. Market guides list the ownership transfer fee at around AED 350, plus small knowledge and innovation fees, and the technical inspection at roughly AED 120 to 170 where needed. Registration renewal and plate changes cost extra if they apply. Check the current fees with the RTA, as they can change.

Step 8: cancel insurance and Salik

  • Cancel your insurance after the transfer and ask for a pro-rata refund of the unused period.
  • Remove the car from your Salik account, or transfer the tag, so you aren't charged for the new owner's trips.
  • Check your fines a few days later to make sure nothing new appears in your name.

Selling a financed car in Dubai

Selling a financed car in Dubai takes one extra stage: the loan has to be settled and the bank has to release the car before the transfer. The usual steps are to ask your bank for a settlement amount, pay off the loan (sometimes with the buyer's money, through an agreed process), and get the bank clearance letter. The bank then removes its mortgage on the car, and the transfer can go ahead.

Car-buying companies like Car Buying Zone guide sellers through these steps regularly and can help with minor loans.

Selling a company car

For a company-owned car, the authorised signatory handles the sale using the trade licence, a no-objection letter on company letterhead and the company stamp. Make sure the trade licence is valid, because an expired licence can stop the transfer.

Sell car before leaving UAE

If you need to sell car before leaving UAE, start at least a few weeks before your flight. You will need to clear all fines, settle any loan, and either transfer the car to a buyer or arrange an export certificate if you are shipping it. Selling to a car-buying company is often the simplest route when time is short, because the inspection, payment and transfer help happen together.

How long each step takes

StepTypical time
Checking and paying finesMinutes, online
Getting a bank clearance letterA few days, depending on the bank
Technical inspectionAbout 20 to 40 minutes at the centre
Finding a private buyerDays to weeks
Ownership transferUsually under an hour once both parties and documents are ready
Selling to a car-buying companyOne visit, if documents are ready

Knowing how to sell your car in Dubai is mostly about doing these steps in the right order. The paperwork itself is quick; finding a buyer and waiting for bank letters are what usually take the time.

Common mistakes when selling a car in Dubai

  • Leaving fines unpaid until the day of the transfer
  • Forgetting the bank clearance letter for a financed car
  • Booking the inspection too early, so the certificate expires
  • Accepting a payment that hasn't cleared
  • Cancelling insurance before the transfer is complete
  • Forgetting to remove the car from Salik
